When Is It Bad Luck to Wash Clothes
This one is a sneaky piece of British folklore. There’s an old rhyme: “They that wash on Monday have all week to dry; they that wash on Tuesday are not so much awry; they that wash on Wednesday are not so much to blame; they that wash on Thursday, wash for shame; they that wash on Friday, wash in need; and they that wash on Saturday, are sluts indeed.”
Basically, Saturday washing meant you were lazy or badly organized. My friend Jenny refuses to do laundry on a Saturday because her gran called it “the servants’ day of work.” Now, Jenny just calls it a global day of laziness to avoid the stigma. Pretty smart.
The Windy Day Warning
There’s also a weather-based superstition: never hang clothes out in a strong wind on a new moon. The wind is said to carry threads of your fate away with it. You won’t lose your soul, but you might lose a good job or a friend.
I once hung my sheets out during a storm on a new moon and then spent three hours looking for my car keys. Was it the wind? Probably not. But I’m not risking it again. Some things are just better left dry on a rack.
