Here’s the part that makes me laugh. It’s a bitter laugh, like when you find a hair in your soup.

These same councils are also telling us to prepare for climate change. They’re begging us to reduce our carbon footprint. They want us to be resilient.

But when we try to be resilient against the literal sun, they say, “No, not like that. That’s too loud and ugly.”

So, what’s the solution? Open the windows? In a city? In August? And let in all the lovely traffic noise and car exhaust?

Ah, right. That’s natural. That’s fine. But a quiet, efficient AC unit? That’s a step too far.

A Brief, Sweaty Rant

I get it. Conservation areas are nice. Old buildings are charming. But when it’s 35 degrees Celsius and I’m sleeping in a puddle of my own regret, charm goes out the window.

Literally. With the AC unit balanced in it.

The irony is thick enough to cut with a spatula. We’re told to buy electric cars to save the planet. We’re told to use less gas. But we can’t plug in a 900-watt cooling machine without a planning application?

Councils say the rules exist to protect “amenity.” But whose amenity? The amenity of the guy across the street who doesn’t want to hear your compressor? Or your amenity to not die of heatstroke?

I think we all know which one wins in a council meeting.
