When Was the Dartford Tunnel Built
Imagine trying to dig a giant hole 1.4 kilometers long, under a river that’s already there. And you can’t just use a spade. You need pressurized air to stop the tunnel from flooding, which gave workers the bends if they weren’t careful. It was basically a high-stakes game of “don’t die today.”
The first tunnel cost about £11 million (a fortune in 1963). Adjusted for inflation, that’s like buying a small fleet of Ferraris and burying them in the mud. The second one cost even more—£55 million—because everything was more expensive in the ‘80s (big hair, bad music, huge bills).
And yet, here we are today, zipping through it at 50 mph (or 3 mph on a bad day). Success!
