We can’t ignore the new guard, right? Guys like AJ Styles and Kenny Omega (okay, Kenny is more AEW, but work with me) have raised the bar so high that old-timers cried “spot-fest!” You can’t deny that AJ Styles had a near-perfect WWE run, from his debut at the Royal Rumble to his epic matches with John Cena.

And then there’s Roman Reigns. Love him or hate him (and you probably love him now, don’t lie), his “Tribal Chief” character is the most layered, compelling work in WWE history. He’s the complete package: look, promo, and ring skill. But calling him the best ever feels like cheating because he’s still active and his story isn’t finished yet.

The Dark Horse: Kurt Angle

Let me circle back to that story from 2003. Kurt Angle, in my humble opinion, is the most underrated candidate for this title. The man was an Olympic gold medalist who decided to become a wrestler—and he was terrifyingly good at it. He could wrestle a technical match with Bret Hart, a brawl with Stone Cold, and a comedy match with Santino Marella.

But here’s the twist: Angle’s body broke down fast because he gave 110% every single night. He’s a perfectionist, and perfectionism comes with a physical price. You can’t argue with his resume, but you can question if a 10-year peak is enough to beat a 30-year career.
