Steamer Quay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite
The real star of the show is the River Dart. It’s tidal, so it’s like watching a slow-motion magic trick. At low tide, you can walk on the mudflats and feel like an explorer. At high tide, the water comes right up, and you can watch dinghies bob like drunken ducks.
I saw a dad trying to teach his son how to skip stones. The kid threw one and it hit a seagull on the wing. The dad just said, “That’s a bonus point, mate.” The seagull wasn’t impressed. But we all were. It’s that kind of place—where clumsy moments become hilarious memories.

Evening Rituals and Awkward Silences
Come evening, everyone lights their fairy lights. It turns the site into a little constellation of canvas and plastic. You sit outside with a glass of something, listening to the clink of mugs and distant laughter. It’s the sound of people not checking their emails.
You try to start a campfire chat with a couple from Birmingham. They’re lovely, but you both run out of things to say after “nice weather.” That’s okay. The silence is filled by the lapping tide and an owl that sounds like it’s laughing at you.
