When Is the State Opening of Parliament
There are really two main slots for this spectacle. The first is typically in May or June, after a general election or at the start of a new parliamentary session. The second is in the autumn, usually October or November, after the long summer break. Think of it as Parliament’s version of a “back to school” assembly, but with a lot more velvet and zero permission slips.
The King—or Queen, historically—does not just show up on a whim. The government decides the date and then announces it, usually about two to three weeks beforehand. It’s the political equivalent of “surprise, we’re having a party, and you have to wear a weird robe.”
Why so secret? Because the government has to make sure all the laws they want to announce are ready. Imagine if you promised a big reveal at a party but forgot to bake the cake—you’d delay the party, too. That’s exactly what happens if the date is leaked before the legislation is ready.
