James Hampton Throne of the Third Heaven
Hampton was a perfectionist. He saved every scrap of foil and carefully smoothed it out. He even made fake jewels from colored glass and tinfoil.
He signed his work as “Saint James.” Not just James. Saint James. He also wrote “This is the True Throne” on the back of one piece.
One piece is a “Throne of God.” It has a little sign that reads, “I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.” The lightbulb he used was a 60-watt bulb. Very specific, very Hampton.
The Quirky Details
He used purple and green foil for special accents. Purple was for royalty. Green was for life. The whole scheme is surprisingly modern and vivid.
He built seven thrones for the seven angels of the churches. Each one is slightly different. One has a broken chair back that he turned into a glorious headrest.
There’s even a gilded footstool shaped like a toilet. No joke. Hampton believed the throne must have a footrest. He used a commode from a hardware store.
