What Dinosaurs Were in the Uk
You know that smug feeling when someone says “Britain doesn’t make anything anymore”? Well, we actually invented the dinosaur. The very first dinosaur to be scientifically named was the Megalosaurus, discovered in a quarry in Oxfordshire back in 1824. Picture a Victorian gent in a top hat, pointing at a giant thigh bone and saying, “Right, chaps, that’s a ‘great lizard.’” They had no idea what they were looking at – they thought it was a giant elephant or a biblical giant. It’s like finding a stray sock in your sofa and insisting it’s a new species of moth.
And where did this famous fossil end up? The Oxford University Museum of Natural History. It’s still there, looking like a giant stone brick with teeth. If you visit, you’ll see the original Megalosaurus bones, and you can’t help but feel a little proud that our ancestors weren’t just complaining about the weather – they were digging up monsters.
