Edoras, Rohan’s capital, was built on Mount Sunday, a hill in the Canterbury highlands. The whole set was constructed from scratch, including a wooden hall that took 200 workers months to build. Then they tore it all down after filming. Because why not? But the ghost of Edoras still lingers—the hill is a popular hiking spot, and locals say you can hear horses’ hooves in the wind.
Fun fact: the weather was so brutal that the actors’ fake beards kept freezing to their faces. Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) reportedly kept his beard in a heated case. The man is dedicated to the beard game.
