How Often Does Tower Bridge Open
Every Londoner has a “bridge lift” story. The classic one is the 1984 incident where a London bus jumped the gap as the bridge was rising. Spoiler: it didn’t drive off; it skidded to a halt on the moving deck, but the myth survives.
You might also recognize the opening from the climax of The Mummy Returns or from the opening credits of Sherlock. The bridge is basically an unpaid actor in the British film industry. It has a cameo in Spice World, too, which is peak ’90s London.
Fun fact: the bridge’s blue color is technically called “Tower Bridge Blue,” though it was originally painted a chocolate brown. It was repainted in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and has stayed blue ever since. It’s the only shade of “London blue” that has its own fan club.
