France Is European Country
Let’s talk about the Eiffel Tower. Built in 1889, it was supposed to be a temporary structure—a 20-year decoration that people hated. They called it a “metal asparagus,” an “eyesore,” and “a disgrace.” Guess what? It’s still there, and now 7 million people visit it every year. The story is classic France: act like you hate something, then make it your entire personality. The tower also grows taller in summer (up to 6 inches) because metal expands in heat. So if you see a tourist taking a selfie with a shorter Eiffel Tower in winter, they got scammed.

Paris itself is stunning, but also… the smell. Depending on where you stand, you get a mix of fresh croissants, cigarette smoke, and dog poo. Paris has an estimated 300,000 dogs, and their owners seem to view the sidewalk as the dog’s personal toilet. The city even uses a special street-cleaning vehicle called the “Motto” to power-wash the poop away. Because nothing says romance like a power-washing truck.
The French & Time: A Hostile Relationship
If you’re American, you’ll be baffled by French time. Dinner at 9 PM? Sure. A meeting that starts “à 14h” might actually begin at 14:15, or not at all if the person got ‘pas envie.’ (No desire.) The French have a word, “le système D,” which means “the system of improvisation.” It’s a national skill. They’ll fix a broken car with a nail file and a prayer. And if the government proposes a new law? Le système D kicks in, and suddenly everyone is protesting while drinking espresso. It’s chaotic, but it works.
So, yes—France is a European country. But it’s the European country that eats snails, sells accordion music on street corners, and once hosted a guillotine as a form of entertainment. It’s beautiful, maddening, and absolutely unforgettable. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go strike for a longer lunch break.
