How Many Natives Were Killed in the Trail of Tears
Don’t just memorize the number. Remember the why. It was greed. Pure, simple, gold-rush greed for cotton land in Georgia and Alabama. The Natives were in the way.
Next time you hear someone say “America was built on hard work,” just nod and quietly remember it was also built on 8,000 pairs of moccasins that never finished their walk. Sip your coffee. The history is bitter, but pretending it isn’t true is worse.
And hey, if you want a deep dive, look up the Choctaw and Chickasaw removals. The Cherokee get all the press, but those other nations were walking through ice storms with literal chains on. It’s all terrible. But now you know.
Go hug a history book. Or a Native friend. Remember their names, not just the body count.
