Before you do anything, flip that jacket inside out and look at the little white tag. Seriously, do it now. That tag isn’t just legal jargon—it’s a cheat code. Most Patagonia jackets (especially fleece, like my Better Sweater) are fine with a gentle machine wash in cold water. But your Nano Puff or down jacket? Different story. Don’t skip this step, or you might end up with a lumpy, sad sleeping bag instead of a jacket.
A quick note on detergent: never use fabric softener. It coats the fibers and ruins the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating. Your jacket will start soaking up rain instead of beading it off, and nobody wants a soggy sleeve.
