Let me tell you about my buddy Tom. He loves soda, drinks it like water. He never thought about the water cost in his fizzy fix until he noticed his grocery bill was bigger than his utility bill.

A single 12-ounce can of soda costs around 50 cents. That includes the water inside, but it also pays for sugar, flavoring, packaging, and trucking it across the country. Suddenly, that tap water in a reusable cup looks like a steal.

He laughed when I told him his soda habit costs him about $30 per gallon for water. That’s a markup of nearly three thousand percent! He’s still buying soda, but now he winks at his tap every time he fills his mug.
