Whole House Carbon Water Filter Installation
Find the main water line coming into your house. It’s usually near the water meter, lurking like a metallic snake. Turn off the main shutoff valve—a moment of silence for the water pressure you’re about to sacrifice.
When you cut the pipe, water will still dribble out. It’s a law of physics called “The Plumbing Law of Maximum Mess.” Have a towel ready, or better yet, a small pool for your dignity. Surprising fact: your house holds about 4 gallons of leftover water in the pipes, and gravity is not your friend today.
Installing the Filter Head
Slide the compression fittings over the pipe and tighten them like you’re closing a pickle jar you really want to open later. Don’t overtighten—brass fittings can crack, and a cracked fitting is a sad waterfall in your basement.
Most filters have arrows showing water flow. Ignore them at your peril. I once installed one backwards and my water tasted like regret. The arrow points to the inside of your house, not to your neighbor’s garden—though they might appreciate the irony.
