London Bridge Sold to an American
Workers rebuilt the bridge over a man-made canal. Yep, they dug a canal in the middle of the desert just for this bridge. You want to talk about commitment? They installed a full English pub next to it, too. Because nothing says “Arizona” like a pub called “The London Bridge Pub” in 110-degree heat.
It opened in 1971. And guess what? It worked. Tourists flocked to see the bridge that had crossed the Thames now crossing a ditch in the Mojave. People loved the absurdity. They took photos. They bought t-shirts. They probably asked, “Wait, where’s the river?” repeatedly.
Wait, Is This True?
Yes. It’s completely true. The bridge is still there in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. You can walk on it. You can drive on it. You can have a picnic and pretend you’re in London, except the temperature will physically hurt you. The only thing missing is rain and a guy in a bowler hat grumbling about the Tube.
So what did London get? They got a new, modern bridge in 1973. It’s plain concrete. It’s fine. But Arizona? They got a genuine piece of history. And a very funny story to tell at parties.
