What Does the Crust of the Earth Do
Without the crust, Earth would be a glowing, uninhabitable ball of lava. It provides the stable ground for forests, farms, and your couch. It also traps just enough heat to keep our atmosphere cozy.
Those pretty rocks you pick up at the beach? They’re crust samples. That fertile soil in your garden? Crushed-up crust mixed with dead stuff. You are literally standing on the foundation of all life.
Funny Quirk: It Moves While You Sleep
You think you’re still? Nope. If you’re in North America, you’re drifting away from Europe by about an inch per year. That’s like the crust is playing a very, very slow game of hide-and-seek.
Enjoy this while it lasts. In 50 million years, the Mediterranean Sea might be gone, squished shut by Africa. Los Angeles will eventually slide past San Francisco. Your GPS will be seriously confused.
