Wiring 2 Switches to 1 Light
You’ll need two three-way switches (they look like normal switches but have an extra screw terminal), a length of 14/3 or 12/3 electrical cable, and basic tools: a screwdriver, wire stripper, and voltage tester. Don’t skip the voltage tester—it’s your safeguard against a nasty surprise.
Why three-way? Because these switches have three terminal screws (plus a ground). Standard switches only have two. The extra terminal creates a “traveler” system that passes power back and forth, like a polite game of hot potato.
Fun fact: the three-way switch was invented in 1884 by John Henry Holmes, a British engineer who probably never imagined it would one day save you from tripping over laundry in the dark. Thank you, John.
