Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa Kinlochard Aberfoyle Stirling
Dinner at the Caorann Restaurant is an event. But a fun event, not a stuffy one. Think venison, local salmon, and haggis if you’re brave. (I wasn’t. I had steak. It was perfect.)
The wine list is longer than my arm. And my arm is pretty long. The sommelier is friendly, not intimidating. He suggested a red that paired so well with my steak I almost clapped.
Breakfast? Oh, glorious. Full Scottish fry-up, pastries, fresh fruit—the works. And the coffee is strong enough to wake a hibernating bear. Exactly what you need before a day of… more relaxing.
Activities: For the Lazy or the Adventurous
Here’s the thing: you can do nothing and still have a great time. Read a book. Stare at the loch. Nap. Repeat. It’s a valid itinerary.

But if you’re feeling ambitious, there are walking trails everywhere. Literally step outside and you’re in a fairy-tale forest. You half expect to see a unicorn or a talking fox. (I didn’t. Disappointing? Maybe. But the views made up for it.)
There’s also a golf course, bike hire, and boat trips on the loch. The hotel even has a movie room. Yes, a movie room. Popcorn included. I repeat: popcorn included.
The Vibe: Effortlessly Scottish, Unapologetically Relaxed
That’s the secret sauce here. It’s not trying to be a “luxury” hotel that makes you feel awkward. It’s luxurious because it’s comfortable. The staff are warm and genuine. They call you by name. It feels like staying at a very rich, very cool friend’s country house.
Even the other guests are chill. No one’s showing off. Everyone’s just… happy. Must be the loch air. Or the spa. Or both.
Honestly, I’m already planning my return trip. And I’m not even done writing this article. That’s how good it is.
So, do yourself a favor. Book a weekend at Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa. Tell them the person who raved about the pillows sent you. (They won’t know what that means. But it’s a fun conversation starter.)
