Mamma Mia at the West End

今注目を集めている Mamma Mia at the West Endについて、多角的な視点をご紹介しています。

The Donna in our show was named Mazz Murray, and she looked like she’d been playing the role since the 70s (she has, basically). Her voice had that gravelly edge of a woman who’s lived a little. When she sang “The Winner Takes It All,” the entire row went silent. It was heartbreaking—and then two seconds later, she was shaking a sequined skirt in our faces.

The three dads—Harry, Bill, and Sam—were a comedy trio for the ages. Our Sam was built like a Greek statue, but he also knew exactly how to land a dad joke. That’s the secret: the actors don’t take themselves seriously. They wink at the audience constantly, like we’re all in on the joke.

And the ensemble? Those kids are swimming in energy. They do backflips. They change costumes in seconds. They probably have abs of steel (I’m jealous). The choreography is tighter than a snare drum, but they make it look like a Thursday night at a club.

So, Is It Cheesy? Absolutely.

Look, if you’re allergic to cheese, stay away. This show is a fondue fountain of glitter, miscommunication, and platform shoes. But that’s the point. It’s a safe space to be silly. You can cry during “Slipping Through My Fingers” and then laugh at yourself for crying because the next song is about taking off your dancing shoes.

I will say this: don’t go if you’re in a bad mood. Mamma Mia! is like a friend who forces you to hug them until you smile. It’s aggressive joy. By the second act, you’ve surrendered. You’re clapping along, you’re thinking about booking a trip to Greece, and you’re wondering why your life isn’t a musical.

One last note: buy the interval ice cream. It’s a West End tradition, and they sell a “Super Trouper” flavor that is pure marketing genius. Does it taste like ABBA? No. But it tastes like fun. And isn’t that why we’re all here?

So go. Book a ticket. Wear something you can dance in. And if you hear someone belting “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” on the Tube afterwards, don’t judge them. That was probably me. See you at the disco.
