How to Hook up Phone Jack
First, turn off the power to that room. I know, it’s low voltage, but do you really want to zap yourself while holding a screwdriver? Didn’t think so.
You’ll need a phone jack kit—the wall plate and the little plastic connector inside. I got mine at the hardware store for like, the price of a fancy latte. You’ll also need a punch-down tool. It looks like a weird plastic stapler. Don’t panic—it’s easier than using a fork.
Oh, and wire strippers. Unless you want to bite the wires like a wild animal. Please don’t bite the wires.
Step One: Find the Secret Wire
Your wall likely has a bundle of wires hiding behind a blank plate. If not, you’ll run a new cable from your basement or attic. That’s a whole other coffee chat, trust me.
For now, let’s assume there’s a loose gray cable back there. It’s usually four or six tiny wires inside, each with a color. Red, green, black, yellow—like a weird little rainbow.
Fun fact: most phone lines only use the red and green wires. The other two are for a second line or fancy features. You probably just want to make a call, so keep it simple.
