What Happens to Walt in Lost
Here’s the kicker: Walt only returns once in the final season. He’s a tall, grown man now. He shows up at the end of the episode “What They Died For.” He visits Hurley, who is now the Island’s protector.
Their conversation is infuriatingly short. Walt says he “heard” voices calling him back. Hurley says he needs his help. And then? That’s it. The screen cuts to black. We never see Walt do anything.
Was he a future Protector? A ghost? A time-traveler? The showrunners admitted they had big plans for him. They said he was meant to be a “figure of great importance.” But the actor’s growth spurt—and the show’s focus on other characters—sunk that ship.

What About the Epilogue?
If you watched the DVD epilogue, “The New Man in Charge,” you get a tiny crumb. Hurley and Ben go to a Dharma station to shut it down. They find a guy named Hector. And what’s in that station? Polar bears in cages. And a box of Walt’s comic books.
It’s a sad little nod to his potential. Like, “Hey, remember how cool Walt was supposed to be? Here’s a polar bear to remind you.”
