Okay, you’re not rewriting the laws of the land. But you’ve definitely been in a mini-convention yourself. Ever tried to plan a road trip with three other people? That’s a constitutional convention on wheels. You’ve got the driver (the executive branch), the navigator (the legislative branch—they decide the route), and the backseat critic (the judicial branch—they interpret the rules and declare your playlist unconstitutional).

When your kid argues that “everyone else has a later bedtime,” they’re petitioning for a change in the social contract. It’s a tiny, adorable constitutional crisis. You, as the parent, have the power to call a convention. You can either amend the bedtime rule or veto the entire argument and send them to bed.

Even your workplace has one. Those employee handbooks you never read? That’s your office’s constitution. The day the team decides the “no headphones” rule is outdated and holds a meeting to change it? That’s your very own, very boring constitutional convention. But it matters!

Why We Don’t Do It Every Tuesday

Here’s the catch: Constitutional Conventions are a big, loud, messy deal. They’re like deciding to completely remodel your house while you’re still living in it. You can’t do that every weekend without going insane. That’s why we usually just amend the Constitution instead—like painting a wall or swapping out a light fixture.

In the U.S., we haven’t had a full-blown national convention since 1787. It’s a bit like that first, magical Thanksgiving dinner you can never quite recreate. Too much pressure. States, however, will hold them every so often when their old rulebook gets too dusty and impractical.

Think of the last time you tried to rewrite your family’s Christmas gift-giving rules. Someone always feels cheated. That’s the risk. A convention can unlock amazing progress, or it can create a bigger mess than you started with.
