When Does Bread Expire
Bread is basically a fungus hotel. It contains sugars, water, and warmth. That’s a mold paradise.
Ever notice how bread lasts longer in winter? Humidity speeds up spoilage. Hot, humid summer? Your bread expires in days. Dry winter air? It might last a week longer.
Also, never refrigerate your bread! It accelerates staling. The scientific term is “retrogradation” of starch. Fancy word for “turns into cardboard.”
Freezing is your friend. Bread freezes like a champ. Pop it in the freezer and it stops the clock. Thaw it, toast it, and it’s brand new.
The Toast Test
Here’s a weird trick: If you're unsure, toast it. Dry heat kills surface mold (but not deep spores). If it smells musty after toasting, discard it.
But if it toasts up golden and smells like a bakery? Go nuts. Spread butter. Live your best life.
Your nose is a better expiration detector than any label. If it smells sour, vinegary, or like a dirty sock, it’s time to say goodbye.
