How to Know When Asparagus Is Bad
Here’s a dangerous idea: "Maybe I can just cook out the badness." No. You cannot. Cooking will not fix slime, mold, or that swamp-dragon smell. It just makes your whole kitchen smell like a swamp-dragon’s funeral.
I tried this once with a "maybe okay" bunch. The resulting dish tasted like sour grass and disappointment. My family staged an intervention. The asparagus went to the compost bin, where it belonged.
Surprising fact: In ancient times, asparagus was used as a medicinal plant for toothaches and bee stings. Bad asparagus will give you a toothache just from the psychological trauma of eating it.
