Phylums of the Animal Kingdom
Echinodermata includes starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. They have radial symmetry—usually five points, like a star. And they move using tube feet, which are basically hydraulic mini-suckers.
Sea cucumbers look like slimy pickles that filter sand. And starfish can regrow a lost arm—and even a whole new body from just one arm! They’re the Wolverines of the reef.
Chordata: You Are Here!
Finally, Chordata. This is our phylum, baby! We have a notochord (a flexible rod) at some stage, a hollow nerve cord, and pharyngeal slits. Later, that notochord becomes your spine.
Chordates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals—including you. Yes, you are a chordate. And so is your dog, a tuna, and that weird pigeon on the fire escape. We’re all spine-having, vaguely fishy cousins.
