Back in 1990, before CGI could even dream of a deadlight, there was Tim Curry. His Pennywise in the miniseries is still the gold standard for many fans, and for good reason. Curry understood that the best horror comes from a twisted sense of humor, like a clown who thinks he’s hilarious while he’s munching on a child’s arm.

He didn’t have fancy digital effects; he just had a voice that could shift from a playful lisp to a guttural growl. The moment he says “I’ll kill you all,” his eyes go dead, and you think, “Yep, that’s a demon.” It’s a masterclass in using pure charisma to sell the supernatural.

Curry’s Pennywise felt like a creepy uncle who lived in your basement. He was a trickster who genuinely enjoyed the hunt, making you laugh before he made you scream. Honestly, can you imagine anyone else popping out of a shower drain with that exact face?
