Where Were Waffles Invented
To find the waffle’s roots, we have to go way back, to the ancient Greeks. They were cooking flat cakes called obelios between two metal plates over hot coals. These were more like flatbreads, but the concept of pressing batter between hot irons was born.
Fast-forward to the Middle Ages in Europe. The idea really took off, but with a religious twist. People in the Low Countries (modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands) started making thin, wafer-like biscuits called oublies.
These were baked in ornate, long-handled irons stamped with religious symbols and sold outside churches. You could think of them as the original “church snacks.”
