Rockome Gardens in Illinois
The rock maze is a highlight and a humbler. It’s made from stacked stones that come up to your waist, and the paths twist like a drunk snake. My husband charged ahead with the confidence of a GPS, only to end up back at the same spot three times. Meanwhile, a retired couple from Ohio glided through while eating popcorn.
You learn a lot about your marriage in a rock maze. Mainly that you should always let the person who asks for directions lead. We eventually made it out, triumphant and slightly sweaty. The reward was a shady bench and the sound of wind chimes made from old silverware. Bliss.

The Old School Ice Cream and a Good Sit
No good garden visit ends without ice cream. The little concession stand sells giant soft-serve cones for what feels like 1980s prices. I got a twist cone and ate it while sitting on a bench shaped like a giant rocking chair. A bee landed on my knee, looked me over, and flew off as if to say, “You’re fine, kid.”
It’s the kind of moment that makes you realize how often we rush. Sitting there, covered in melted vanilla, listening to a fountain gurgle nearby, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders that I didn’t even know I was carrying. A bee judged me and approved. That’s rare.
