University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center
Because UAB Medicine is proof that you don’t need to be in Boston or San Francisco to change the world. You just need a bunch of Alabama folks with lab coats and a very healthy dose of stubbornness. They’ve cured blindness, transplanted hands, and fought a pandemic while drinking sweet tea. If that isn’t the most American thing ever, I don’t know what is.
So next time you hear “Birmingham,” don’t think of steel mills or football. Think of the hospital that’s quietly saving your life, one ridiculous, brilliant operation at a time. And bring an appetite—the cafeteria’s cinnamon rolls are unironically amazing.
