Season 1 Cast Squid Game
First up, we have Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456. This guy is basically your lovable uncle who can’t catch a break—he’s in debt, his ex-wife is fed up, and his mom is disappointed in him. Watching him stumble through life is like seeing your friend try to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions: messy, stressful, but you can’t look away.
Gi-hun is the everyman we all recognize. He’s the dude who gambles on a horse race and then blames the horse when he loses, which feels uncomfortably familiar if you’ve ever said, “I’ll pay it back next Friday.” By the end, you’re rooting for him because he’s you on a really, really bad Tuesday.
The Villain You Love to Hate
Then there’s Jung Ho-yeon as Kang Sae-byeok, the North Korean defector and Player 067. She’s the cool, mysterious friend you’re a little intimidated by but secretly want to be. Every time she picked the triangle shape during the honeycomb challenge, I swear I held my breath like I was watching a cooking competition where someone might explode.
Her story hits hard because she’s not just a number—she’s a sister trying to reunite her family. When she finally lets her guard down and shares her dreams, it’s like that moment at a late-night diner when your quietest friend reveals they want to be a painter. You feel both joy and dread because you know the game isn’t kind.
