Why Freezer Frosting Up
Frost is more than just an eyesore. It acts like insulation. That layer of frost actually makes your freezer work harder to keep things cold. Your energy bill goes up, and your ice cream ends up with a weird, icy texture.
Why Does Frost Build Up In Freezer at Lucy Gardiner blog
I once had a bag of frozen berries that were encased in a solid block of frost. It looked like a prehistoric fossil. Not appetizing. Regularly de-frosting prevents that and keeps your food tasting fresh, not like a frosty science experiment.
The Quick Fixes
If you see frost, don’t panic. First, turn off the freezer and empty it into a cooler. Let the frost melt naturally (or use a hairdryer on low, but keep it moving). Wipe every surface dry before turning it back on.
Check the door seal with a dollar bill test: close the door on a bill. If you can pull it out easily, the seal is loose. Clean the seal with warm soapy water—sometimes grease or crumbs break the seal. And for heaven’s sake, don’t shove a hot casserole in there again.
