You might think, “I’ll just follow the crowd.” Oh, you sweet summer child. The crowd is a slow-moving river of panama hats, sensible shoes, and people who haven’t blinked since 1997. Without a map, you’ll end up at the wrong gate, staring at a hedge that costs more than your car.
The show grounds are a bizarre grid of temporary gardens, tents, and champagne bars. You will get lost. I once spent twenty minutes in a “scented arbor” before realizing it was just a fancy porta-potty. The map is your weapon against horticultural humiliation.
The Royal Hospital: A Historical Hospice for Your Feet
The Royal Hospital Chelsea is actually a retirement home for war veterans, called “Pensioners.” They wear these magnificent red coats and look like they’ve just stepped out of a Dickens novel. Fact: The show takes over their front lawn. Imagine waking up one morning and finding a 20-foot-tall copper giraffe made of living moss on your lawn. That’s their Tuesday.
The hospital’s grounds are roughly 11 acres. That’s the size of about 8 football fields, or roughly 4,000 of your mother-in-law’s prize-winning petunias. You will walk about six miles. Your Fitbit will send you a “congratulations on your marathon” notification, and you will cry.
