Side Effects of Eating Mold
Here’s my hard-won advice: if you see mold on any food that is soft, wet, or porous (bread, leftovers, jam, berries, pasta sauce), bin it immediately. Don’t sniff it, because that shoots spores up your nose and into your lunch. For hard cheeses and firm salami, you can safely cut away the moldy part—but only if you’re feeling lucky.
And for the love of all that is holy, don’t feed moldy food to your pets. Dogs and cats are smaller than you, and a tiny amount can make them very, very sick. They don’t have a “just cut it off” option. They have you.
Look, we all do dumb things at 2 AM. But next time you’re eyeing that fuzzy corner of bread, remember: the side effects are usually just a bad day of bathroom sprints. But sometimes—just sometimes—they’re a trip to the doctor for a “how did you eat how much of what?” conversation. Your gut will thank you for the compost bin. Promise.
