Has London Always Been Capital of England
Before London strutted onto the scene, things were wild. England didn’t even exist as one country.
We had the Romans, the Angles, the Saxons, and the Vikings. Everyone wanted a piece of the pie.
Each had their own favorite power spot. Imagine a game of musical thrones, but with more mud and fewer rules.
Winchester: The OG Capital
Cue the dramatic music for Winchester. This city was the real deal for a long, long time.
It was the capital of the kingdom of Wessex. King Alfred the Great hung his crown there.
Winchester was the political and religious heart of Anglo-Saxon England. It was the place to be.
Fun fact: The famous Domesday Book was started there. Not in London. Take that, Big Smoke.
