Qualities of a Researcher
The first quality of a researcher is a bottomless appetite for questions. It’s not just curiosity; it’s a relentless, toddler-level insistence on “why” until someone’s ears bleed. I once watched a colleague spend an hour trying to figure out why the office coffee maker beeped exactly five times, not four. Turns out it was a secret message about descaling. That’s the mark of the beast—er, a researcher.
This quality makes them terrible at parties. Someone says, “I heard carbs are bad for you,” and the researcher’s brain instantly snaps to “Define ‘bad.’ For whom? Under what metabolic conditions?” While everyone else is sipping wine, they’re mentally designing a control group. It’s exhausting, but it’s also how we got penicillin and, more importantly, the optimal temperature for reheating pizza.
