Now, you might think playing a villain this good would be a departure for Laurie. But dig deeper. He’s actually a musician, a bluesman at heart. Music taught him rhythm—and Roper’s menace has a certain jazz-like pace.

Laurie also wrote a novel, The Gun Seller, about arms dealers. So he came to set with real insight into the role. No wonder it feels so lived-in.

And here’s a fun fact: He originally auditioned to play the villain in a different show, but they wanted him for comedy. He waited decades to play a part like this. Worth the wait, huh?

Why It’s Cool That He Played Roper

It’s cool because it redefined him. After The Night Manager, you can never see Hugh Laurie the same way. He’s not just the witty doctor; he’s also the king of creepy calm.

Think of actors like Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. That role stuck because it was transformative. Laurie’s Roper does the same thing—it proves he’s got range.

Plus, it’s a treat to watch someone have fun playing evil. Laurie has said in interviews that Roper was a “joy” to play—and you can see the glimmer in his eye when he delivers a chilling line.
