How Many Ounces in a 1/2 Liter
You might see a recipe from Europe that says “500 ml” instead of 1/2 liter. Same thing! 500 milliliters equals 16.9 ounces—no tricks. And if you see “0.5 L” on a bottle of fancy Italian water, yes, that’s also 16.9 ounces. They just wanted to sound fancier. Italians, am I right?
And for my friends using imperial pints: a British pint is 20 ounces, so half a liter is less than a British pint. But a US pint is 16 ounces, so half a liter is more than a US pint. See? Even the pint can’t make up its mind. The metric system is the only sane one here.

A Quick Cheat Sheet for Your Fridge
Stick this on your fridge for next time: 1/2 liter = 16.9 oz. Or just remember “a big water bottle.” You can also remember that a standard wine bottle holds 750 ml (about 25 ounces), so half a liter is two-thirds of a wine bottle. That’s useful if you’re ever drinking wine and need to measure something. Not that I’m judging.
And if you’re ever cooking with a European friend and they hand you a measuring cup in milliliters, just smile, nod, and divide by 30 for a rough ounce count. It won’t be exact, but cooking is about love, not precision. Unless you’re baking. Then measure exactly, or your cookies will betray you.
