Substitute for Sour Cream in Recipe
Plan A: Plain Yogurt – This is your absolute best friend. If you have a tub of plain yogurt (Greek or regular), you’re basically saved. The texture is nearly identical, and the tangy flavor is a dead ringer. Use it in a 1:1 ratio, meaning one cup of yogurt for every cup of sour cream the recipe asks for.
I once used Greek yogurt in a creamy chicken pot pie, and no one at the dinner table said a word. Just a heads-up: Greek yogurt is thicker, so you might want to add a splash of milk or water to loosen it up. Regular yogurt? Pour it in straight from the tub.
Plan B: Crème Fraîche – This is sour cream’s fancy cousin. It’s richer, less tangy, and doesn’t curdle as easily when you heat it up. If you see crème fraîche in your fridge, use it with confidence for sauces or soups. It swaps one-for-one, and your dish will taste extra luxurious.
I’ll never forget the time I used crème fraîche in a last-minute pasta sauce. My husband asked if I’d become a secret chef overnight. I just smiled and didn’t tell him it was a lucky swap.
