Gracie Barra Chelmsford Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Self Defence
Most self-defence classes teach you to punch first. That’s great if you have fists of steel. But BJJ? It’s the gentle art of ground hugging with a plan.
You learn to take the fight to the floor. On the ground, size and strength matter a lot less. A 135-pound person can control a 200-pound person. It’s like magic, but with more sweating and less wand-waving.
Quirky fact: The uniform is designed to be grabbed. In BJJ, we actually want you to grab our sleeve. Then we use that grab to trap your arm. It’s a friendly trap. A trap that ends with a tap-out.
The "Tap Out" Is Your Best Friend
You know that moment in a movie when someone screams, "I give up!"? In BJJ, we tap. A little pat on the mat or on your partner’s body. That’s the reset button.
At Gracie Barra Chelmsford, tapping is celebrated. It means you learned something. You didn’t get hurt. You just successfully failed on purpose. Great job!
You will tap a lot. So will everyone else. It’s the most humbling high-five you’ll ever receive.
