How to Plant Pine Trees from Seed
Pine seeds are drama queens. They think it’s winter. To wake them up, you must fake winter. This is called stratification. It’s nature’s prank on seeds.
Get a damp paper towel. Not wet, damp. Like a sponge after you wring it out. Put your seeds inside. Now shove the whole bundle into a ziplock bag. Write “PINE BABIES” on it. Stick it in the fridge for 3 to 6 weeks.
Don’t freeze them. A fridge is a coma, not a grave. Check every week. If you see mold? Throw it away. If you see a tiny white root? Celebrate. Your fridge is now a nursery.
The “Is it Dead?” Test
Gently squeeze a seed. Is it hard and fat? Good. Is it flat and crispy? Dead. Discard the flat ones. They’re quitters. You want the chunky ones with ambition.
Some seeds may already sprout in the fridge. That’s called a “strat break.” It’s a good sign. It means they bought your winter lie. Once the root tip is visible, they’re ready to party.
